Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is an excellent treatment for freshening and exfoliating facial skin. It can help reduce the visibility of acne scarring and slight wrinkling, as well as do away with extraneous “peach fuzz” on the face.

HOW DOES DERMAPLANING WORK?

Dermaplaning is a safe and highly effective exfoliation procedure. Our Dermaplaning Esthetician carefully “shaves” the skin’s surface, removing the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine, vellus (peach fuzz) hair (aka peach fuzz). The procedure takes less than thirty minutes and there is no downtime post-treatment. Patients who routinely receive dermaplane treatments comment on the smoothness of their complexion and see an immediate improvement in their skin tone and radiance.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DERMAPLANING?

There are several benefits to dermaplaning that may make it the ideal method of skin exfoliation for you. First, no chemicals are involved, which means less irritation for your newly sensitive skin. Secondly, the procedure generally lasts no longer than 30 minutes and won’t leave you with a red, swollen complexion afterward. Results can be noticed immediately. Finally, dermaplaning can target specific problem areas more easily and skillfully than other procedures that use larger instruments and focus on the face as a whole.

Dermaplaning is also frequently used prior to another facial treatment. Since dermaplaning removes the dead skin cells and stimulates the surface of the skin, chemical or plant based skin formulations are absorbed more efficiently and results are remarkably improved.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR DERMAPLANING?

The ideal candidate for dermaplaning aspires to have smoother, softer, healthier skin. Those suffering from dry, rough, or uneven skin tones, superficial hyperpigmentation, shallow acne scars, and fine lines benefit from the smoothing effect of dermaplaning.

WHAT IS RECOVERY AND AFTERCARE FOR DERMAPLANING LIKE?

While dermaplaning requires no downtime, in the period after your dermaplaning treatment, it’s essential to take good care of your skin to maintain your results. Some recommendations for the first 24 hours after dermaplaning treatments include:

  • Avoid sauna and steam rooms
  • Don’t wear any makeup
  • Do not exfoliate your skin or use products with exfoliating ingredients
  • Refrain from strenuous exercises
  • Hydrate externally with moisturizer and internally by upping your water intake

In the two weeks following your dermaplaning treatment, you can extend your results by:

  • Following a simple skincare routine with mild cleansers
  • Maintaining a moisturizing routine
  • Patting, not rubbing your skin dry
  • Avoiding harsh products
  • Avoiding prolonged sun exposure and using a high SPF daily

After your dermaplaning procedure, you’ll notice an improvement in your skin immediately. Your skin will continue to improve by following our guidelines and any specific instructions our skilled aestheticians provide.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS OF DERMAPLANING LAST?

Dermaplaning removes approximately 21 days of dead skin cells and peach fuzz on your skin. Clients who undergo dermaplaning treatments generally enjoy the results for about three weeks.

WHO IS NOT AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR DERMAPLANING?

While dermaplaning is a very safe procedure, there are some medical conditions for which the treatment is ill-advised. If you have any of the following medical concerns, it’s best to consult with a medical professional before scheduling a dermaplaning appointment:

  • Acne
  • Skin cancer
  • Open wounds
  • Cold sores
  • Moles
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Hemophilia
  • Thick, dark facial hair
  • Active infection of any type
  • Chemotherapy or radiation
  • Sunburn
  • Use of Accutane in the past six months.

Additionally, clients with eczema or rosacea should discuss dermaplaning with a medical professional before their procedure to ensure it’s advised for their specific skin concerns.

HOW OFTEN CAN I UNDERGO THE DERMAPLANING PROCEDURE?

Patients who benefit from dermaplaning procedures can have it done about once a month and continue dermaplaning as long as it works for their skin.

A single dermaplaning treatment removes two to three weeks of dead skin cells. Then, by spacing procedures about a month apart, the skin can produce new skin cells that protect the subdermal layers of the skin. However, when dermaplaning appointments occur too closely together, it removes those essential cells.

Since the skin’s natural cell turnover cycle is about 28-40 days, new cells naturally replace dead skin cells every four to six weeks. Scheduling dermaplaning procedures within this timeframe assists in that natural cycle without risking irritation from over-exfoliation.

Dermaplaning is non-invasive and easily incorporated into a regular skincare routine to improve the skin’s health and appearance.

Many of our clients like to combine dermaplaning with regular facials to achieve superior benefits from complementary procedures.
